b005ea - Slow WiFi/Network?

I recently over the past 2 months purchased a refurbished HP b005ea Ultrabook from one of the main computer suppliers, i've been happy overall with the Ultrabook but the wireless connectivity is shamelessly poor.

I am on 120mb internet with Virgin Media UK and i am using the Superhub 2. Even if my laptop is 1-2 feet away from the router the WiFi connection can be sketchy at best. But while i maintain around 2-3 bars when i do a speedtest i am only recieving about 30mbps which is obviously an issue.

It's on the 2G channel, and i've tried the other recommended channels but it doesn't help. Regardless of the wireless connection, the wired connection isn't really amazing either. If i connect it via cable, i get about 70-80mpbs, whereas my other devices get 120-125mbps, so even still it feels very restricted.

Back onto the wireless connection, the reception in other rooms (ie downstairs) is significantly poorer. This is understandable for the distance, but i purchased a TP-Link WA850RE. The TP-Link improved it slightly but not massively even though the signal on the TP-Link was strong.

The current drivers i have seemingly are the very latest, but it's still restricted.

I am wondering if i maybe should buy a USB WiFi device which goes upto 300mbps - As the network capability is only about 100mbps, so i don't know. Would updated drivers work - But i can't find any?
